Description: Recupel is in Belgium responsible for the collection and processing of discarded electrical appliances. In 2018, the NGO collected more than 117.000 tonnes of electro, or 10.3 kilos per inhabitant. This puts Recupel among the best in the world when it comes to collecting and recycling e-waste. Since 2001, Recupel has invested a lot of collection and awareness campaign towards the consumers. But companies also have a lot of old or broken electrical appliances stocked in their offices. To offer them an easy solution, Recupel will launch a new digital platform for their e-waste on 14 October. Additionally, Recupel will also launch a digital media and public relations campaign.

Two weeks before International E-Waste Day we will communicate about our possession study and organize a stunt to put the hoarding in the picture (emphasis will be on all electro, not only small appliances). Media used: press & social media.

The stunt will kick off our awareness campaign on radio and television (emphasis on all electrical appliances and also on reuse).

And we will end the campaign wave with the announcement of the collaboration with bpost, offering a solution to people who are hoarding small electrical appliances.

While walking on the streets, indeed, it often happens to stumble upon abandoned appliances which will not reach a collection point and thus being recycled. Taking this evidence, together with some data on WEEE handling, as a starting point, APPLiA would like to conduct a vox-pop on the topic, leaving afterwards space to some interviews to experts while filming the process undertaken by an appliance once in a collection point. APPLiA will also contribute to the video shading light on the impact of lost e-waste for the environment and the home appliance industry. With the aim of raising people’s awareness on e-waste, the video will also show the correct steps that the appliance at its end of life should follow.

But, what happens once our appliances are taken to the collection center? After many years of loyal service helping families around the home, how does their daily life at the retirement home a.k.a. collection center, look like? How does the magic happen?

A short series of explanatory videos, accompanied by more traditional information materials, will guide consumers through the journey of our home buddies, once they have reached their end-of-life, with an eye to shed light on core issues like the scarcity of critical raw materials and the effects of consumer behavior on global warming and health risks.

Description: C-SERVEES aims to boost a resource-efficient circular economy in the electrical and electronic (E&E) sector through the development, testing, validation and transfer of new circular economic business models (CEBMs) based on systemic eco-innovative services that include: eco-leasing of EEE, product customization, improved WEEE management, and ICT services to support the other eco-services. ICT tools (relying on QR codes) will be developed as the driver of the proposed eco-innovative services to take full advantage of the potential and synergies of two major revolutions of our time: the circular economy and the Industry 4.0.

For International E-Waste Day we will be highlighting some of the results of the project through a social media campaign that will encourage business and household consumers to consider how their use of electrical equipment might change in the coming years so that the environmental impact of such equipment can be significantly lowered.

Description: CEWASTE is a two-year project funded by European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. It will develop a voluntary certification scheme for waste treatment. Specifically, the project will create, validate and launch the scheme for collection, transport and treatment facilities of key types of waste containing significant amounts of valuable and critical raw materials such as WEEE and batteries.

For International E-Waste Day we will be launching a number of infographics that draw attention to the work we are doing and highlight the importance of certification schemes in ensuring the proper recycling of e-waste.

    • diverting electronic waste from landfill.

    • saving people from suffering the consequences from ingesting polluted air, water and food.

    What we do

Circular Brussels collects decommissioned ICT from businesses and industries of any size. We securely and certifiably wipe devices of sensitive data after determining which equipment can be reused, refurbished, or recycled.

Reusable ICT are refurbished, updated, and distributed to local community organizations.

Non-Reusable ICT are ecologically recycled by our sister company Out of Use to obtain much needed raw materials in Europe.

For the International E-Waste Day 2021 we will issue awareness raising posts on social media about the importance of RE-using electronic waste and how it prevents thousands of tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere.

We very much support the right to repair idea and we are convinced that every part of the chain has to take an active role to make circularity a reality for e-products. That's why we try to bring science closer to society. Which we also plan to do in the weekend of 23/10. This weekend will be full of activities to raise awareness in Mechelen about the shift we need to make to repair and about the concerns around e-waste.

Considering the fact that India has one of the largest youth populations in the world today, the aim is to create awareness on E-waste among them in order to ensure an informed and responsible set of consumers in the near future.
