Description: In line with WEEE Forum’s main focus for this year’s International E-Waste Day, WEEE Malta will be organizing a number of online sessions in collaboration with educational institutions to promote the correct disposal of e-waste throughout the world. Although Government intends to open the schools as from the 28th of September, WEEE Malta is working to hold the activities online due to the ongoing pandemic situation.

According to international data, a record 53.6 million metric tonnes (Mt) of electronic waste was generated worldwide in 2019, up 21 per cent in just five years. It is estimated that by 2030 this number will reach 74 Mt!

Malta is no vacuum. eWaste generation is on the rise. WEEE Malta, who this year is celebrating its fifth anniversary, has over the past five years, collected and treated more than 5,500 tons of electric and electronic waste. We managed to build a fast and efficient take back system, collaborating with 200 collection points, including producers, retailers, public entities and private enterprises.

Education is key. Both primary and secondary students play an important role in order to continue to instill ‘the importance of repairing or correctly disposing of used appliances with the aim to increase re-use, repair, recovery and recycling’.
