The Circular Energy team will be personally visiting each office to spread the word about this important initiative and provide them with a helpful leaflet that outlines everything they need to know for the day. A designated recycling pod will be set up on-site, making it easy for everyone to safely dispose of their unwanted electrical and electronic items.

At the end of the day, one of Circular Energy's, accredited service provider, Reclite SA, will collect the items for proper treatment and processing—ensuring the e-waste is handled responsibly in an environmentally sound manner.

Description: ERA Celebrates 7 Days of Eco-activism for National E-waste Day
Spotlight on recycling with consumer campaign & industry engagement

For the second year running, Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) ERA will host a nation-wide campaign for E-waste Day, the local iteration of an international movement to combat the negative impact of electronic waste. For the 2023 leg people turned up in droves to recycle their e-waste, with 164,000 kgs collected over one weekend; proving that South Africans are in fact e-waste hoarders.

Waste electronics are outpacing recycling efforts globally, with the rate of e-waste recycling in African countries at below 1%, according to the latest United Nations report*. In an effort to drive this up, ERA has rolled out over 100 e-waste drop-off points across the country in collaboration with the likes of Makro and Pick n Pay.

The “7 Days of Eco-activism” initiative will span across a week and features both a consumer awareness campaign, rewarding people for recycling with spot prizes like air fryers, and a number of industry events to engage and share knowledge for the sector, as well as an E-waste Awards ceremony.

    Inspiring Industry Cohesion

This year, ERA’s efforts will not only engage the public in a follow-up educational showcase with incentivised spot prizes for recycling, but a series of industry events will facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing with key e-waste players.

“Off the back of last year’s successful E-waste Day initiative with Makro, we noticed there was a real need for industry stakeholders - from recyclers, policy makers, manufacturers - to collaborate more closely for greater impact,” says Ashley du Plooy, CEO of ERA.

The planned industry events take place on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th of October in Midrand, Johannesburg and will showcase a number of panel discussions and best practices to tackle the e-waste challenge on both a global and local level. Special guests include senior management of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE); Pascal Leroy, Director General of the world’s largest international association for e-waste, the WEEE Forum; and Pasqual Zopp, the CEO of ERA’s Swiss partner SENS eRecycling.

There will also be an E-waste Awards Ceremony which recognises key industry stakeholders - from producers to recyclers - who have made strides in the area of EPR compliance to date. Says du Plooy: “It is only through this kind of collective effort that we can work towards a greener, cleaner and growing South Africa, and we want to give credit where credit is due.”

    Keeping E-waste out of Landfill

In South Africa, e-waste is growing at three times the rate of solid municipal waste**, with the country’s largest metros facing a looming landfill crisis***. When it comes to recycling, South Africa faces challenges like lack of education on the topic, insufficient infrastructure, as well as behavioural barriers.

“The very idea of recycling electronic waste is not well-known to people, so we find these educational engagement campaigns to be crucial in growing awareness for making true impact in the home. Our recent market insights shows that South Africans do understand there is an intrinsic value to their items, but the result has been e-waste hoarding,” explains du Plooy. “We’re hoping to get e-waste out of people’s homes and into the proper systems for treatment, reuse, and recycling.”

The National E-waste Day activation will take place over the weekend of 11th until the 14th October and encourages the public to recycle their e-waste at ERA drop-off points, posting to social media for a chance to win spot prizes like air fryers. More information can be found on ERA’s social media platforms and their campaign microsite at www.eranpc.co.za/peopleplanetpurpose

    Eco-activism in Action

Ultimately, ERA hopes that their “7 Days of Eco-activism” efforts will contribute positively to the cause of managing e-waste and other Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment and Lighting (WEEEL) in South Africa.

The industry events are by invitation only, however enquiries can be made to itsnotbroken@eranpc.co.za

Description: ERA NPC started operationalising its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Scheme in November 2021.  As from then, ERA has worked on making EEE Producers in South Africa aware of the EPR Regulations through a large number of online seminars, bilateral meetings and through its website. This kind of work was critical as the level of Producer compliance with the new EPR Regulations to date is extremely low, and because the resources required for building effective e-waste management derives from Producer's compliance in reporting their placed on market data and paying the EPR Levies that flows from these reports.

As we move into our second year of operation, we have started working on setting out our initial network of WEEE drop-off points across the country, recruiting WEEE collection and recycling service providers, holding discussions with municipalities for extending WEEE management infrastructure as well as assessing how informal WEEE collectors can be integrated.

ERA's public/business information campaign is to be boosted in the week of 3 October 2022 through an article to be included in the Enterprise Africa publication.

Description: As part of the International E-Waste Day campaign, AST Recycling in collaboration with Timbaktuu, a technology-enabled retail aggregator platform that connects and creates access for companies to township and rural communities, will be organizing an e-waste drive in Soweto, one of the biggest townships in South Africa. E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in South Africa, unfortunately the level of e-waste recycling is very low. While 6 kg/y to 7 kg/y of e-waste is generated for every South African citizen only 360 000 t/y of e-waste is placed on the market. Only 7% to 12% of the total volume is being recycled formally. Creating easy points of collection for e-waste are crucial in addressing this growing problem. Together with Timbaktuu we have identified 25 internet cafes in Soweto township which the local community will be able to use as drop - off points for e-waste. International E-Waste Day will be the launch of a long term project to help tackle the growing e-waste problem in rural areas and townships. We believe that this project will be also beneficial in creating jobs for unemployed youth.

There are currently 25 internet cafes that are working in this township that we are looking to facilitate as e-waste drop of points.

This will be one of many e-waste drives to South African townships.

This post will be shared via the SRS social media channels and newsletter in an effort to inform as many people as possible about the message. Our colleagues are requested to share the social media posts within their own social media channels.

Furthermore SRS will donate trees for every ton (1000KG) of E-Waste delivered into our recycling sites on 14th of October, 2019. This Sims - “E-Waste for Trees” - program will plant two trees per ton, one tree will be planted in Europe and the second one in Africa. Trees and Recycling E-Waste both contribute to a significant reduction of CO2 emissions. Trees capture CO2 emissions, and using recovered E-Waste materials as raw-material in the production process of new products reduces the usage of energy and CO2 emissions significantly. The activities will take place in: The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Austria, United Arab Emirates, South Africa.

Description: WEEE are iLembe is an e-waste recycling partnership initiative that was established to create awareness about the importance of recycling waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) and to create partnerships between key stakeholders to grow the WEEE recycling industry in the iLembe District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.

In support of our awareness creation objective, WEEE are iLembe is coordinating a district-wide e-waste collection drive on International E-Waste Day. The collection drive is being done in partnership with e-waste recyclers, waste collectors, producer responsibility organisations (PROs), local government, and other partners. The collection drive will target residents, businesses, schools, and institutions through providing collection points across the iLembe District.

WEEE are iLembe and its partners will identify locations for e-waste drop-off and collection, co-develop marketing materials and promote the event ahead of International E-Waste Day, and ensure that on the day, e-waste is collected and then channelled into e-waste recycling activities.

Together with our members, we are at the forefront of turning the extended producer responsibility principle into an effective electronic waste management policy approach through our combined knowledge of the technical, business and operational aspects of collection, logistics, de-pollution, processing, preparing for reuse and reporting of e-waste. Our mission is to be the world’s foremost e-waste competence centre excelling in the implementation of the circularity principle.
