The  International Telecommunication Union and the WEEE Forum have continued to collaborate for the International E-waste Day 2020 which will take place on 14 October 2020. For the 2020 edition, the WEEE Forum and ITU have partnered in the preparation of a thought paper on ‘Internet Waste’ as public knowledge is limited about waste derived from connectivity infrastructure.

The full impact and regulation of materials and components critical to the digital economy is difficult to assess as the infrastructure and end-of-life management are less visible. This is true especially to individual consumers that use personal ICT devices supported by data centres and telecommunication networks.

The thought paper focuses on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) derived from wireless infrastructure for mobile Internet connectivity, connected devices and data storage with examples from mobile networks, IoT and data centres. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness about waste from infrastructure that supports connectivity and the need for sustainable WEEE management practices within data centre and telecommunications industries considering forecasted growth.

The thought paper will be published on 12 October 2020, and more information will shortly follow. An online Internet Waste Dialogue will take place on Monday, 19 October 2020, 15:00 – 16:30 (CEST).

The objective of the webinar is to discuss the opportunities and challenges of end-of-life management of infrastructure equipment that enables connectivity. The webinar will bring together various manufacturing and recycling companies as well as service providers to elaborate on waste management of data centres, 5G and IoT.

This webinar targets stakeholders involved in the management of business-to-business (B2B) infrastructure WEEE, especially from industry (including ITU and WEEE Forum members), international organisations and academic networks, etc. The webinar will be held under Chatham House Rules, meaning you can reference what was said in the webinar but not attribute it to a specific individual or organisation.

Full agenda and registration are available here.
