Description: The UNIDO-GEF project on e-waste management in Latin America promotes effective e-waste management in 13 countries across the region. Working with a wide range of technical experts and various partners, the project assists and advises countries on e-waste policies and regulations, suitable management technologies, business models, capacity-building and awareness-raising. As part of the project, a series of webinars on related topics was organized in collaboration with the United Nations University. From April – September 2020 around 120 people representing Ministries of Health, academia, producers, WEEE management companies, NGOs and beyond attended the webinars every fortnight. To celebrate International E-waste Day 2020 a panel session on ‘the involvement of universities in e-waste research’ showcasing the experience of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru) will be held on 14 October.

To date, almost 600 people have been trained on effective e-waste management under the project and 15 universities across the region are in the process of developing curricula/research programmes on e-waste management.

The webinar will be given in Spanish, you can register to the event here.

Campaign "WEEEcycle in order to Help"

Description: Campaign "WEEEcycle in order to Help" in favor of children with burns:

- Promote responsible consumption by companies and raise awareness on the issue of waste management among different actors, co-finance the treatment of patients who have suffered burns from ANIQUEM and also preserve the environment.

- Companies and private institutions in the country can join by donating their waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and ferrous and non-ferrous material.

During the global pandemic of covid-19 and the consequent quarantine, there has been an increase of 30% of cases of children with burns in our country, according to the National Institute of Child Health. At a global level, the Generation of Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment reaches a new world record, with 53.6 million tons in 2019 and only 17.4% of the world's electronic waste was recycled and properly collected and recycled in Peru. There is a special WEEE Management and Handling Regime that establishes recovery as the first purpose and final disposal as the last. Given this fact, the Association to Help the Burned Child (ANIQUEM); Recolecc and Comimtel Recycling, joined forces to carry out "WEEEcycle in order to help" together with the Ministry of the Environment of Peru within the framework of its PERÚ LIMPIO Program promoting this campaign.
