October 14 to 16, 2025
Conference, Workshop
The R3MINARE research group, from the Center for Mineral Technology (CETEM), will host the seventh edition of the International Seminar on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (VII SIREE) from October 14 to 16, 2025. This year’s main theme is: "Circular Economy Strategies for the Recovery of Critical and Strategic Minerals." The 2025 edition will focus on: "Strategies on Circular Economy for Critical and Strategic Minerals Recovery."
The event is aimed at a wide audience, including representatives from the public and private sectors, cooperatives, associations, recyclers, Computer Reconditioning Centers (CRCs), management entities, reverse logistics companies, NGOs, public officials, researchers, professors, university students, and vocational/technical education students.
VII SIREE 2025 will bring together a diverse group of participants from government institutions, research centers, international organizations (such as ITU and UNITAR), industry, and academia — all involved in the management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
On October 14, the event will celebrate International E-Waste Day – VIII IEWD, organized annually by CETEM and held in parallel with SIREE.
On October 16, from 9:00 AM to 11:45 AM, two hands-on workshops will be held as part of VII SIREE 2025:
Maker Circular – Giving new life to electronic waste
Disassembly and Valorization of Electrical and Electronic Equipment
There will be 30 spots available, distributed as follows:
10 for general event participants (first come, first served) and
20 for educator-multipliers, selected through an open call.
These workshops are both educational and practical in nature, covering topics such as creative reuse, repair techniques, and proper procedures for disassembly and segregation of electronic equipment. This is a unique opportunity to reflect on the lifecycle of electronic products and to strengthen the circular economy through education and maker culture.

The Christ the Redeemer monument will be illuminated in blue, red, and green on Tuesday, October 14, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., in celebration of International E-Waste Day, a day that draws attention to the proper disposal of electronic equipment and the recovery of important materials that make up these products. The colors reflect ESG principles ( Environmental, Social and Governance, which stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance), implemented by the Sustainable Christ Consortium, formed by the Archdiocesan Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, the Social Work East One – The Sun, and the Redemptor Institute: green, on the legs and feet, symbolizes connection with the earth; red, on the torso, symbolizes the heart and humanity; and blue, on the arms and head, symbolizes rationality and responsible action. This illumination also appears on the commemorative calendar for the 94th anniversary of Christ the Redeemer. This year's global theme, defined by the WEEE Forum, highlights Critical Raw Materials (CRMs)—essential elements such as lithium, cobalt, gallium, and rare earths, used in the production of modern technologies such as magnets, chips, and electronic circuits. Growing demand reinforces the importance of recycling as a strategic path to reducing dependence on mineral extraction. Brazil recycles less than 3% of its electronic products, and awareness campaigns are crucial in mobilizing the population to increase recycling. The Cristo Sustentável Consortium recognizes this importance and is working in partnership with the startup RECICLOTRON, actively participating in this initiative to highlight the role of consumers as protagonists of change.
The startup, incubated at the Fluminense Federal University's AGIR Innovation Hub on the Nova Friburgo Campus, has developed a gamified ecosystem of sustainable solutions that engages consumers in a fun way, offering artistic stimuli and rewards, and rewarding waste with a digital currency that can be used to purchase offers from the RECICLOPONTOS network of environmentally friendly organizations. Unusable products are sent to the recycling chain, while still-functioning equipment is recovered and donated to social digital inclusion projects. Thus, RECICLOTRON is promoting the green economy, expanding access to digital technology, and helping people experiment with eco-conscious products, using their own waste to finance the transition. The startup's innovative model was internationally recognized by the Green Gown Awards, supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (https://www.greengownawards.org/universidade-federal-fluminensebrazil1?cc=darkmustard). The award highlights good practices aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), proposed by the UN, developed at universities around the world. As part of the awareness-raising actions, the RECICLOPONTOS Recycling campaign takes place in partnership with the City of NiterĂłi, at Campo de SĂŁo Bento, in IcaraĂ, where the population can take batteries, cell phones, cables, chargers, notebooks, tablets and other unused appliances for correct disposal, taking advantage of the offers from the Reciclopontos Network. World Electronic Waste Day is now part of the official calendar of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Reaffirming the city's commitment to sustainability and environmental education, the date is supported by the municipal legal framework, consolidated by Law No. 7,347/2022, which included Municipal Awareness Day for the Proper Disposal of Electronic Waste in the official calendar, as well as by Law No. 7,411/2022, which included the electronic waste awareness campaign in the official calendar.
The WEEE Forum a.i.s.b.l. is an international association representing 49 producer responsibility organisations across the globe. Together with our members, we are at the forefront of turning the extended producer responsibility principle into an effective electronic waste management policy approach through our combined knowledge of the technical, business and operational aspects of collection, logistics, de-pollution, processing, preparing for reuse and reporting of e-waste. Our mission is to be the world’s foremost e-waste competence centre excelling in the implementation of the circularity principle.
