Description: For this year's International E-waste Day, we are organising a collection campaign in regional companies that will last several weeks. Within the framework of the campaign, the employees of the participating companies are to be sensitised to the proper handling of old electrical appliances. The potential in drawers, the reasons for proper disposal and the given disposal options are to be explained. The campaign will start with an information event at which posters and flyers will be distributed. There will also be a social media campaign. In addition, during the entire period of the campaign, it will be possible to hand in old small electrical appliances in collection boxes provided by us directly at the company on site. Certified disposal and corresponding proofs will of course be provided afterwards.

Description: iGEM is an international student competition in the field of synthetic biology. We are this year's team from RWTH Aachen University and we pioneer a biotechnological recycling solution for Rare-Earth Elements (REEs) out of electronic waste. Our mission is to bring sustainable e-waste recycling into communities worldwide via bio-based techniques. In our project RareCycle, we develop a genetically engineered fungus that can capture and release Rare-Earth ions on its surface from a solution of e-waste. This fungus can then be used as an adaptable and cheap filter material to recover valuable resources from electronic waste.

On International E-Waste Day, we will campaign in the laboratories of our university to sensitize people for the growing problem of electronic waste. We will also release new informational material on our Social Media channels that reach a large audience of students and researchers.
