Electrão – Associação de Gestão de Resíduos (Waste Management Association), former Amb3E – Associação Portuguesa de Gestão de Resíduos, is a not-for-profit association established on 27th April 2005. It started as an initiative of 60 of the major producers of electrical and electronic equipments, on the Portuguese market, as an answer to their obligations concerning the extended producer responsibility, for managing an waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) system.
Electrão was the first Portuguese entity created in Portugal to manage WEEE and is a reference in the national waste market since it is the only entity to manage three waste streams: . Electrão stands out with its large expertise, innovation and efficiency in waste management.
Mission and Objectives
Electrão aims to be a trusted partner for responsibility transfer for the management of waste streams, and the effective collection and treatment of waste produced by companies. This service includes delivering value to producers in the implementation of reuse strategies, a more efficient waste management and the implementation of environmental research and communication initiatives, fostering the transition to a circular economy.
Logistics and Treatment
Electrão’s system is organised in a collection network, that has more than 3.500 collection points – distributed by different entities such as shopping malls, companies, fireplaces, schools, supported by an upstream structure, with logistic operators, reception centres and treatment units. These structures, all together, ensure the right WEEE collection, directly from the consumer, and the right WEEE segregation (five waste streams) and treatment. Operators for logistic, reception and treatment are choose accordingly the highest standards of quality and environmental performance and rehabilitee.
In 2018, Electrão was responsible for the collection and routing for treatment and disposal of over 43.000 tonnes of WEEE produced in Portugal.
