Electrão – Associação de Gestão de Resíduos is a Portuguese waste management association that was founded on April 27, 2005, by 60 of the major producers of electrical and electronic equipment in the Portuguese market. Electrão is a nonprofit organization that acts within the scope of the extended producer responsibility, taking care of these companies’ obligations by managing the electrical and electronic equipment waste system.
Electrão was the first organization to manage WEEE in Portugal and the only one that, today, manages three waste streams: battery waste, packaging waste and WEEE. Expertise, efficiency and innovation in waste management are the key skills that differentiate Electrão.
Mission and Objectives
Electrão aims to be a trusted partner for companies to transfer their waste management responsibility. This service includes the effective collection and treatment of the waste, delivering value to producers by implementing reuse strategies, a more efficient waste management and the implementation of environmental research and communication initiatives, promoting the transition to a circular economy.
Logistics and Treatment
Electrão’ system is organized in a collection network that has with more than 7000 locals, distributed by different entities – shopping malls, stores, fire stations, schools. This collection network is supported by an upstream structure, with logistic operators, reception centers and treatment units. These structures ensure the right WEEE collection, directly from the consumer, and the right WEEE segregation and treatment. Operators for logistic, reception and treatment are choose accordingly the highest standards of quality, environmental performance and rehabilitee.
In 2020, Electrão was responsible for routing over 16 702 tons of WEEE produced in Portugal for recycling.
